It's been a few years since our last last life member was inducted and this prestigious award is chosen carefully and only granted to those who have been involved and provided long-term service to the Warriors Footy Club over a decade or more. This doesn't just include playing the game but volunteering for duties over that time. We are please to announce the following inductees to this prestigious life member club

Congratulations Darren Fitzhenry (Fitzy). Fitzy came originally from Knox and has done a tremendous amount for the club over many years including presidency and committee work and we are very proud to have announced Fitzy a latest life member

Well it's finals time and we were very pleased to be here again this year. In all honesty, at the start of the season we were very unsure how we would go this year. Having previously played in the reserves grade, this was the first year in 3 we were playing back at the top level and having two 35s teams again.

But here we were, an intermittently cloudy and a little bit windy day at Shelley Park in Upper Heidelberg playing against the minor premiers in Northern Districts. The other semi was being played whilst we warmed up for our game with Western Saints running out winners in a close game against Melbourne.

And there went the bounce with Big Al for an early tap. We were looking good, sharing the ball around and managed the first goal through Lukey. We continued to play good footy in a tough encounter and Lukey managed to score again. Northern were peppering away chances but we were putting very good pressure on them, forcing the errors. A great first quarter saw as go into the 1st break 3 goals to 1. The second against a slight wind saw Northern gain the ascendancy. But we kept holding them back, the defence was very strong, and other than a couple of points here and there, they couldn't get a look in. With around 5 minutes to go in that second, from a centre bounce on the wing, they went forward, and 3 or 4 players of theirs appeared to be alone forward of centre. They kicked long forward, it was roved by one of those players who kicked truly. Our players appeared to be kick chasing a bit, were we starting to waiver? It wasn't a good 5 minutes as Northern piled on another two goals to go in a goal or so up at half time.

Well we were truly into the premiership quarter now. We were going to have to pull all stops to nullify the opposition who were smelling blood. Unfortunately whilst once again early we managed to hold them back, it seemed it was only a matter of time for the inevitable flood gates to open. And in that third quarter they did. They were out running us and playing smart footy. That true Warrior grit wasn't enough to prevent a really good quarter by Northern giving them a 4 goal lead going into the last break.

It wasn't a foregone conclusion. 4 goals isn't insurmountable but considering we had only kicked 3 goals to this stage, it was going to require something special. Unfortunately we were out of legs and Northern did pretty much as they like in the last quarter to make the result something it didn't really represent in reality. In the end, we had the skill to match them but not the fitness. Even at this level of footy, historically, it is clear the teams that have ultimate success train hard throughout the year and learn their patterns. It is something we will need to work hard at next year and instil in all our players. Nevertheless a great season both on and off the field.

Thank you to all who have volunteered this year. It requires a huge effort to get 3 teams on the field every fortnight. Let's continue to grow and make a successful 2017 even greater in 2018.

Well it seemed like Round 1 was just yesterday but here we are for the last home and away games for the season. The most important game today was for the 35s where a win against Box Hill could potentially give us a 3rd place finish on the ladder and a first finakl against 2nd instead of 1st.

But let's start with the oldies. Once again, like all season, it was a glorious Sunday morning, with even the sun peeking out between the clouds. We trekked to old foes Carrum hoping for a strong showing to finish off the season. We welcomed back Robby G for a cameo appearance and Simon from Adelaide couldn't resist returning for another game. We had a strong running side this week and were intent early on making the most of it. Carrum started strongly but couldn't convert piling on 4 behinds before we struck gold with the first goal of the game. The second came quickly afterwards and we were playing some really good footy. We ended up 3 goals to 1 up at quarter time. The intensity was strong in the second as we tried to attain an ascendancy but we couldn't stop their supply to their extra tall forward ex-Liston trophy winner (VFL goal-kicking for the uninitiated). Unfortunately we didn't have anyone tall enough to counteract although our backs used all their nous to limit his opportunities. By the end of the 2nd quarter we had slipped to a goal behind. The third was a dour competition, we were still playing really well but another 2 goals to them gave them a handy 3 goal lead at the final break. Our injuries were mounting and without a bench left by the end of the game we had 3 or 4 players hobbling around unable to push any harder. As they say the talls don't get shorter and they just kept bombing it long and high to their gun forward and the gates opened up in the last. Once again, like the whole season, we showed how competitive we can be when we had a full side, but we always seemed to be 2 or 3 players short each week. Nevertheless it was a a great season and hope everyone enjoyed themselves and look forward to going again next year.

The 35s reserves did not have the aid of the 50s early on, who had to trek from Carrum over to Box Hill. Some of the 1st doubled up early on, and we were competing very strongly. We had a reasonable breeze in the first but didn't make the most of our opportunities and went in 4 points behind. We need to keep in touch in the second and we played really well early but with the extra run, Box Hill started to get on top as the quarter progressed. They managed 4 goals in the second to our solitary goal and went in at half time 4 goals in front. The third was a dour affair. We were sharing the ball around and making good use of the wind but once again just couldn't get the breaks we needed. We won the quarter but only just. In the last it was going to be a matter of how much further we could push, with a few 50s playing their 6th and 7th quarters of footy, and being against the wind. Our guys pushed hard but there just wasn't enough in the tank and we went down by a comfortable 6 goals. All in all considering the shortage of at least 6 or 8 players for the season, all things considered, other than a couple of games, we were extremely competitive and it bodes well for 2018 when we know we will be a stronger outfit. Well done to all the boys for sticking it out in difficult circumstances.

It was exciting times for the 35s. We knew unless there was a blow out loss against Box Hill that we were finals bound. A win could push us ahead of Melbourne who had to play the top team. We had the wind in the first and we made good use of it, sharing the ball around and attacking well. Probably didn't make the most of our chances on the scoreboard but went into the 1st break 8 points ahead. Unfortunately in the second we couldn't get our usual flow going and Box Hill started to get on top. It seemed they were running harder than us and wanted it more. They piled on 4 goals and if it wasn't for a late one by us, things could have started looking grim. But it was only 9 points at half time, we'd had more scoring shots and we knew we needed to just work harder in the premiership quarter with the wind. And didn't we come out firing? Our backline was steady as a rock repelling most attacks and the forward line were finally clicking. In probably one of our highest scoring quarters for the year we managed an impressive 6 goals, one after the siren to go into the break full of confidence. The question was whether the 17 point lead was going to be enough against the wind. We would have to dig deep. As expected Box Hill came out blazing and pushing hard. But we weren't about to die wondering. We kicked a goal, then they kicked a goal, then us then them. With only a few minutes to go we still had a handy 14 point lead. The made it a bit nervy kicking another goal but as they made another forward array the siren went and we'd held on in what was a really tough affair. Unfortunately we were to find out later that Melbourne had actually won by a point but take nothing away from our team this year. At the start of the year we were all very apprenhensive about how we would go with many new players but we showed pretty much every game that we were up there for talent with the best of them. We look forward to being better and stronger next year.

35s firsts will now play #1 on the ladder Northern Districts for a chance to play in the grand final. Although we lost both games to them this year, we were up at half time last time and know we can compete with them, it's just a matter of that Warriors pride. Let's do our best.

An unseasonally warm night meant we were greeted to a dry, all be it a little bit blustery, Sunday for out home games in Round 9. Unfortunately Essendon pulled out due to lack of players so the 50s game was cancelled. The upside of this was that we had enough players to fill a full reserves 35s side including a decent bench.

A quick head count showed there were 10 x 50s players helping out for the reserves this week. We had a full bench and confident we could put on a strong showing against Western Saints. However it looked ominous early. We were completely outclassed and the midfield was being soundly beaten. They had piled on a number of goals before we could even oil our gears. At quarter time we committed to playing more defensive and it started to show. Suddenly we were winning the contests and sharing the ball around well. The opposition were starting to hear footsteps. We outscored them in the 2nd quarter and it was purely due to us wanting to do the hard things, the 1%ers. The third quarter was a battle, we kept in it, and the game was still there to be won at 3/4 time. Unfortunately, as we tired in the last, errors crept into our game, we were losing contested ball as the opposition clearly looked fitter. The flood gates opened and the Saints piled on maybe 8 goals in that last quarter to make the margin look a lot more than the the reality of most of the game. A good effort but disappointing to let that last quarter go so easily.

Well, the 1sts was always going to be a tough battle. Western Saints have had a great season and were in 2nd spot. We were fighting with Box Hill for that 4th finals spot so it was very important that we put on a great show, and at very worst did not let the score blow out, as percentage might become very important. We were keeping an eye out for Box Hill's performance against the top team in their game.

Well from the very first bounce it was clear that we weren't going to die wondering. We played some very competitive hard footy and nutted out a 2 goal lead at quarter time. The trend continued in the second where were playing tight disciplined footy. The backline were not giving the opposition an inch and rebounding well. And we were making the most of our opportunities. We managed another 3 goals for the term to their two. Saints weren't second on the ladder for no reason, The third was potentially going to make or break. And wasn't it a tough, torrid affair. Big Cam took a strong mark but received a whack to the face which caused a profuse nose bleed and out for the game. Tala was sent off with his counterpart not to take part again. And Kieran received two hard head knocks within a minute of each other which also produced some claret. Would that stop us, no. We had one of the best quarters of the season to completely shut them out and went into the third quarter 35 point lead. We started the 4th well, we desperately wanted the win, but we lapsed a little in concentration, maybe we were already celebrating, and this allowed Saints to pile on 4 goals in the latter half of the quarter. The score ended up a lot closer than it should have been but for 3 and a half quarters it was a fantastic display of consistent, hard footy. A great win by the Warriors. And as we found out with Box Hill being smashed in their game, an almost certain spot in the final 4.

Next week we want the prove to Box Hill that we should be there as we play them last game. The 50s play old foes Carrum and it would be fantastic to end the season with a win in what has been a challenging season. Bring it home Warriors.

Another glorious Melbourne day greeted us for our Round 8 games. We've been extremely lucky weather wise this season. The 50s needed to kick off some dew. By the quirks of the draw in a 12 team comp, 10 match season, we somehow get to play the top undefeated team, Willi Blue again after playing them just two games ago. Last time we met, their superiority showed out with a 20 goal to 1 drubbing. We knew we were much better than that and we were keen to show that on our home turf. Our desire was immense and it showed on the field. Unlike the previous match where we started very slowly we played great footy and ended the first quarter ahead 2 goals to zip. We did have the wind so we were going to have to knuckle down in the 2nd and show it wasn't just a wind factor. We restricted them to just one goal in the second and scored one ourselves. They were very inaccurate with 1 goal 9 behinds but that was due to our immense physical pressure. Willi were fighting with themselves, with us, with the umps, they weren't used to being in this position. Could we maintain the pressure in the second half? The wind seemed to drop off and Will started to assert their authority. They piled on 3 to 1 and went into the 3rd quarter ahead by a goal. We were still in it but it would require an extraordinary effort. Unfortunately with no bench left and a very physical game for us, the inevitable took its toll and were outscored 5 goals to zip in the last. This game was much closer than the final score showed and the result was due to our huge hearts in bringing an undefeated team on 500%+ to the brink of defeat. Well done boys.

Both 35s were playing at home against the strong Northern Districts. So what do you get when you mix Tala & Disco selected for the first team, Juzzy coming back prematurely from a knee operation and six 50s players who have just played a tough physical game and just the bare 18 players playing against the top undefeated 35s reserves side? Typically you get a severe beating. And that was the case. We tried extremely hard but by half time we hadn't troubled the scoreboard. You know you are in trouble when the opposition kicks another goal and 3 opposition players run to the bench to be replaced by 3 fresh legs and there is nothing on your own bench. At half time we made a commitment that we would score as no-one likes going down for the day with doughnuts. And we fought like crazy as a team and created some scoring opportunities and finally had ourselves our one and only goal courtesy of Dasha. In the end it was a day to forget but we cannot under-estimate the effort put in by our players against all the odds. Our time will come. As an opposition player said, two years ago we were in the same boat as you.

35s firsts were confident after a great performance the week before. Despite our fair share of injuries we've been playing out our games well and in a close competition it was imperative that we put our best foot forward this game against the 2nd team on the ladder, Northern Districts. With the wind in the first we played extremely well and took the most of our opportunities to take a 21 point lead into the break with a 4 goal to 1 quarter. The second quarter was going to test our mettle against the wind but we kept our structures strong and kept the pressure on them to reduce their ability to score. Despite them kicking 3 goals we managed 2 of our own to lead by 9 points. We had thus far pressured hard, transitioned well and scored when the opportunities arose. Only half a game though and Northern are 2nd on the ladder for a reason, we knew they would come out hard. Unfortunately we couldn't repel, our players appeared to be tiring. The same zip of the first half wasn't there and Northern could sense it. This was the premiership quarter and with the wind we couldn't manage to score a goal whilst they managed 4. Down by 16 points at the break, we were still in it if we were good enough but alas that was not to be. We just couldn't go on with the pressure and as good sides do, they ran away with it. A disappointing 2nd half where we managed just 1 goal. Still, we tried our best and we are still in the running for the top 4. It appears that it will be between Box Hill and us and unless either of us can topple the top two sides next week, it will come down to the last game when we play Box Hill as to who gains that coveted spot. Let's surprise top team Western Saints next week and put it out of Box Hill's reach.

We woke up to a freezing morning but a beautiful sunny day. 50s travelled down the highway to Geelong where it was reportedly minus four overnight. Fortunately the game was pushed back to a 11.30am start so the ground was nice and dry for our start. Unfortunately we started as if we were still frozen. At the 15 minute mark of the 1st we were already 26 points down and scratching our heads as to why. We managed to scrape a couple of goals back before the siren to stay in touch. Second quarter wasn't much better, some how Geelong were getting players free on their own. We didn't kick a goal and they kicked two. After a soul-searching speech by the coach at half time and promising each other to ensure a more defensive mindset, we finally started to gain momentum. In fact by the middle of the third quarter, Geelong had only entered their back half a couple of times as they could no longer find a way out of our forward line. We capitalised and ended the quarter piling on four goals to none. 2 points ahead at 3/4 time it was always going to be a tough last quarter. Our players were going down like nine pins through injury. We managed to pull 10 points ahead and from there it was fight to the death. Problem was there was no scoreboard and we didn't quite know if we were winning or not. Geelong kicked a goal, the siren went, we thought we had lost by a point, but we found out we had won by a point. What drama, what a fightback, what Warriors spirit.

35s were playing at home, first of three in a row at home, and it was always going to be tough. We just managed to scrounge the 14 players we needed and 50s weren't of help this week due to playing away, very far away. The call went out to Juzzy who is recovering from a knee operation and he answered the call and played very well on top of it. So it was going to be another one of those days where the reserves just need to keep looking within and fight as hard as they can. The highlight of the day was Lee Gold kicking his first goal ever. One for the memories. In the end, as expected the Melbourne team were far too good but once again an extremely proud performance by the boys.

35s firsts were meeting Melbourne again. Last time we had a memorable nail-biting 1 point win at their ground. We played out of our skins and it remained to be seen whether we could do the same again. Every match from here on is very important. Aiming to make the finals for a second year in a row, a win would help the cause immensely. Well once again it was a close hard fought game. 1st quarter was a dour affair with no team being able to find 6 points, Melbourne troubling the scoreboard just twice for 2 points and us once for 1. The second quarter was a different story and very inspiring by the Warriors. 4 goals to 1 saw us open up a handy lead. Again, as always, we knew they would come out fighting and that they did. Kicking very straight we managed 2 goals as they did but they also added 4 behinds. 2 goals in front, we were going to find out what we were made of. As we knew, Warriors kept strong and held out for a very exciting 10 point win. Similarly to the first time we played them, we kicked well for goal and they kicked badly. But kicking goals is the aim of the game and the pressure we were able to apply consistently was always in the back of the opposition's mind. Once again we were struck with the injury stick, with Lee Bailey ending up with a ruptured patella. We wish you a quick recovery.

Great to have the two wins this week. Next game we are having a triple header at home so will be great to see everyone including families there on Sunday week. Let's make it a big day for the Warriors.

A sunny day greeted us for Round 6 games and it was a case of bringing a packed lunch for our journeys to the west.

The 50s travelled to Williamstown to play top team Willi Blue sitting pretty on top of the ladder. With 7 forced changes from the previous week's game, we were going in with trepidation unsure of how well we could compete. Well the first 10 minutes of the quarter was a really tough, torrid affair with no team really gaining an ascendancy. We hit them with everything we had and it was paying off. Gradually though Willi's superior outside run was starting to have its effect. We went into the first quarter a couple of goals down but knowing we were competitive. As the game wore on, although we tried our very best in true Warrior fashion the quality of Willi was showing out. It wasn't until the third quarter that we managed our first and only goal courtesy of Vinnie. By the end of the game we only had 15 players on the field as injury and fatigue took its toll. It was one of those days where not much went right but very proud of the boys for not giving up rat any stage. Unfortunately despite being a 12 team comp and only a 10 game season we have to for some reason butter up and play Will Blue the top team again in two rounds time. Being a home ground and hopefully with a full team to pick from we can show hem who we really are next time.

The 35s reserves started the game with 16 players against Werribee who seemed to have a healthy bench of players to choose from. We needed to hold them as best as we could until the cavalry (Over 50s arrived from their game). Unfortunately Werribee got the jump on us and by the end of the 1st quarter were 8 goals and 49 points up on us. As more players slowly filtered in, we found ourselves more competitive and starting to assert ourselves. We ended up keeping them honest at half time outscoring them 1 goal 3 to just 3 behinds. It was a great effort. By the 2nd half we had our full complement of players and the difference was stark. We kicked the first couple of goals of the quarter and were linking up beautifully. The play had opened right up and it was now an exciting game to watch. We played a little loose at times which allowed them to get a few goals back. By 3/4 time the game was obviously over but we committed to each other to outscore them in the final quarter. And that we did. In a very open last quarter we kicked 6 goals straight to 3 and showed that we can match anyone when we are on song. Take away the first quarter when we were blown away due to being short of players, for the rest of the game we outscored them 9 goals to 7. Every player should hold their heads up high.

35s came out feeling confident after beating Werribee the previous time we played. We knew playing at their ground and with a few key injuries that it was going to be more difficult this time around. In the 1st quarter we convincingly outplayed them against a slight wind. Unfortunately as has sometimes been the case this year, we couldn't put the ascendancy on the scoreboard. We did manage to go into the 1st slightly ahead. The 2nd quarter was a tough battle, no-one could really gain scoring opportunities and at the half way mark of the quarter there still had only been one goal in total scored for the whole game. Then the flood gates opened a bit as the game opened up and whilst we managed to double our goal tally for the quarter, a bit of lapse of concentration allowed Werribee to pile on 4 goals late to be ahead at half time. The third quarter was similar, we were just holding on but not quite being able to put it all together. A bit of inaccurate kicking by them gave us a sniff as we were only 30 points down. Unfortunately the great comeback was not to be. Werribee were full of running and we were not, the shortage of players and a bench had taken its toll and although were were able to kick a couple, we couldn't stop them kicking six to end up 50 pint winners.

We're hoping that we can get a few players back for our next games, 50s travelling over to Geelong and 35s back at home for the first at home for 3 in a row. We're in a building phase and we just need to keep fighting as we know a Warrior does.

Another glorious Melbourne winter day was upon us. The 50s were playing at home and the fog was just lifting off the ground and the grass very wet so we knew the first half at least was going to be a tough slog. We'd never beaten Frankston before but were confident we could turn the tables. We went into the game with a new 5-man forward strategy hoping it would keep the area open. It was clear early on that we looked the superior side, we made plenty of opportunities and the opposition weren't getting many themselves. Unfortunately we couldn't do any damage where it counts and that was on the scoreboard. Unbelievably Frankston went in to the first change ahead. It was more of the same in the 2nd, make no mistake this was a highly physical game and they were making us earn every kick but we still were getting much more of the ball. We finally put a goal on the scoreboard, they didn't score at all and the game was pretty much back where it started from. 2nd half followed the same pattern as the first. We were better but they scored the goal. It was frustrating but it was still there to be won. Come the last quarter, our injuries were piling up. Mitch pulled out before the game, Sammy was having knee troubles, Strangey pinged his other calf and Billy was done after pulling a hammie. We were up against it but that true Warrior spirit shone through again, we had 90% of the play, it only went forward for them a couple of times. We had our chances, we kicked a goal to be within one point with only a couple of minutes to go, we pressed and pressed but just couldn't get that needed goal. In the end a game that slipped through our fingers, but kudos to every player on the field, it was a tough affair and we showed our competitiveness no matter who we play. We're going to need that against top team Williamstown BLUE next round.

35s reserves were playing a long way from Clayton at Bundoora against Northern Districts. They weren't going to get the help from the 50s this week so it was important that all selected were there on time to prepare. Unfortunately a bit of a trend is setting in, there were only 8 players there when they should have been there, and players were straggling in right up to game time and two turned up at quarter time. This is simply NOT good enough guys, you let down your team mates and the club. Unfortunately this affects the mindset. Playing an extremely strong Northern Districts side with only 14 players was never going to realistically allow us to win. Luckily the opposition gave us four players but obviously they were not going to be any of their better ones. It was great to see new player Lee Bailey dominate despite the thrashing. In the end we were just no match and didn't trouble the scoreboard. Not our best effort but again we can't expect miracles. Thanks guys for pushing till the end in trying circumstances.

35s have been competitive all year and were keen to see how they would match the undefeated Northern Districts. It looked ominous early with them piling on 4 goals before we even had a sniff. Were we really that uncompetitive? No, the rest of the game proved to be a tough and even battle. We found it very difficult to score, couldn't find that way through. Come the last quarter we needed 4 goals to win. Revved on and feeling strong we responded and kicked two goals in the first couple of minutes to get within 9 points. The game was there to be won but in the end we ran out of legs and a couple of cheap goals at the end flattered the opposition score. Despite a couple of important last minute players pulling out before the game and some key players missing, and 3 or 4 50s players having to back up to help, it was very encouraging that we were able to stretch the top team to the limit. It gives us confidence that we can compete with any team in the competition and we look forward to our next game against Werribee.

We woke up to a beautiful sunny Sunday autumn day which was going to be good for some great quality footy.

The 50s travelled to Brunswick's home ground near the Melbourne Zoo. We were looking forward to building on our improving form, and getting one back against Brunswick as they beat us in Round 1. Warriors lost the toss and we were asked to kick against a light breeze in the first quarter. Unlike the previous game we started very strongly, you could just feel the pressure we were applying was up, and the opposition were feeling it. We had a strong quarter and were happy to come in with a slight 8 point lead. The 2nd quarter we turned the screws and our dominance showed as we piled on 4 goals to their 2 which gave us a comfortable half time lead. The strong message at half time was to ensure we did not get complacent. As often happens after half time, the losing team comes out hard, and today was no exception. Pushing hard, Brunsiwck put on a couple of early goals to sneak within 5 points. This was no time to get nervous, we knew that we just had to keep playing the same hard style, and we ended the quarter well on top. The last was all Warriors, where we piled on 5 goals 5 behinds to just the solitary point. After some great performances we finally had a strong 47 point win, and this was reflected when we sanf the club song with gusto in the change rooms.

35s Reserves rocked up to St Kilda to play against Melbourne. With a few injuries, some players playing with injuries that normally you wouldn't play with (thanks Puppy and Dasha) and 50s players only able to help after half time (trekking back from Brunswick) this was always going to be tough for us. We started with 16 players and it became quickly evident that our under-manned side would just have to fight manfully throughout. Getting that Warrior spirit going was the best we can do, and unfortunately we weren't able to penetrate our forward line often and our backline had lots of work to do. In the end it was a convincing win for the opposition but we are very proud of every player out there giving their all for 4 quarters against the odds.

35s were feeling very confident after their first convincing win last game. Melbourne were not going to be easy though as they were 2nd on the ladder with the healthiest percentage of all. But our own line up was very strong and we welcomed the return of Big Cam and keen t see how the two-pronged tall combination of Cam and Machine would go. Melbourne had the wind in the first and the game quality was absolutely amazing. Melbourne were moving the ball extremely well and slowly increased their lead in the first but we weren't looking out-played or out-muscled, we were competitive at every level. 2nd quarter, there was no let up, but we started moving the ball ourselves a bit more constructively and we had ourselves an arm-wrestle. At half time we went in just ahead in an enthralling battle. Third quarter we came out strong and managed another quick goal to give a little breathing space but that was followed up by 2 from Melbourne to take the lead again. We were setup for a nail-biting last quarter. The pressure was unbelievable, with only just over 4 minutes to go, Melbourne were ahead by 6 points, we kicked a behind, less than a kick in it. A defender's worst nightmare, they kicked out straight to Cocky who duly put it straight back over their heads for a goal. We had to now hold on, do something the AFL Tigers couldn't do. The ball stuck close to the boundary, players were cramping, but the fairytale eventuated. Once again the renowned Waverley Warrior fight saw us take out Melbourne at their home ground, potentially setting up our season. Next game 35s play away again this time at the very strong Northern Districts and 50s play at home to Frankston. Great win! What more can you say?

We geared up for our first games at our own home ground after having to move our Round 1 home games elsewhere. It was one of those Melbourne days where the weather couldn't decide what to do so we endured sunshine, rain and clouds through out the day.

The day started with the 50s kicking off the dew against Beaconsfield. We hadn't beaten them before so we were keen to make club history. The ground was still wet so it was going to be a wet weather style of game. And the first quarter proved to be a tough affair with both teams locking horns but Beacy inched their way in from to be a goal ahead at quarter time. Unfortunately the second quarter proved to be costly. Something wasn't working, our rotations weren't smooth and they really had outplayed us in most aspects of the game. We ended up scoreless in the 2nd whilst they piled on 3 goals to hold a handy lead in slippery conditions. We knew we were still in the hunt but we needed to hit them hard early in the third. That idea was quickly deflated as Beacy kicked a quick goal and we knew it was a matter of pride from there. We managed to get one back but it was a little too late. Having a bench for a change helped us to come home hard but we left the gap too large and whilst we kept them scoreless in the last whilst putting on two, we ended 19 points in arrears. Disappointing but we know we can do better if we can just remove those lapses of concentration. We look forward to putting up a good showing against Brunsiwck next game.

Looking very suave after having their team photo taken, the 35 reserves ran onto the ground confident that we could keep our good form going and stay out a whole match to record a win this game against Werribee. We were keen to start hard and make a statement but unfortunately it didn't pan out that way and in the first Werribee piled on 3-3 to our one behind to take a commanding lead. It looked like it was going to be a tough day but in true Warriors fashion we dug a bit deeper and turned it around in the 2nd. We were wayward in front of goal though and could only manage 1 goal in 5 scoring attempts but crept closer as we managed to keep them goalless. The third was a see-sawing battle and it was their turn to be a little wayward which kept us in with a sniff at 3/4 time to be just 13 points down. Werribee tried to close the door early in the last by kicking an early goal but from that point on they could hardly get forward as we attacked continuously and reaped the rewards with a couple of goals. A costly miss running into goal left us 6 points behind and with a couple of minutes to go we had another set shot which went to the left and left us agonisingly close but no cigar. All in all a very proud effort by the boys considering we had 7 Over 50s players who had already played a game, fronting up for the reserves. A win is just around the corner.

There was excitement in the air. With a couple of new players for their first game there was one in particular with a big reputation, his nick name being Machine, that every one had their eyes on. But this game wasn't going to be won by one man, footy is a team sport and it is the group as a whole and its determination that would win the game for us. Early signs were tremendous. There was something about the commitment and desperation that seemed a notch up on previous games. Some of the team work and link up play was awesome and a pleasure to watch. First quarter ended pretty even but it was our second quarter where we started to stamp our authority on the game. By the half way break we were up by a couple of goals but the superiority hadn't yet shown clearly on the scoreboard. The third quarter was adour struggle but were able to maintain our strong commitment at the ball and harass. Another goal to us in the third and a goalless one by them left us with a comfortable but not unassailable lead. The hard game had taken its toll. With three players out injured for the game by late in the third we were down to 17 players. Would we be able to withhold the onslaught? Well it was clear early on in the last when Werribee pushed hard that we certainly would be able to. Due to the relentless pressure, They were now hearing footsteps and continually spraying their disposals. This is what Warriors footy is about. Amazingly with only 17 players left we dominated the last and ran out comfortable winners. A brilliant win, the first for the season, and great reward for a team effort. Well done. Oh and for the record Machine did live up to his reputation kicking 4 goals

Next games are away against Melbourne for the 35s, who have proven to be a vert strong side. The 50s play Brunswick who defeated us in Round 1 and it will be good opportunity to gauge our improvement and hopefully turn the tables.

Well a lovely day for footy, it was even a little bit humid for a late April day but all teams were keen to put in some good performances playing away. There were some interesting trends and coincidences in all games. One, in all 3 games, we started well and were leading at various stages in the first half only to run out of legs. This can be partly attributed to still having quite a few players having to double up for games taking its toll towards the end of games. And all teams kicked 6 goals. Three very competitive games but unfortunately losses all round.

Well with a couple of quality running players back in the side we were expecting big things and for the most part we absolutely delivered. Again with only 18 players and no bench and a big ground we knew it was going to get tougher as the day progressed. We played some great link up footy in the first half and that showed on the scoreboard when we went in 8 point leaders. From that point on, as the legs grew weary, it was a matter of whether we could hold on or not against what thus far had been a pretty impressive Williamstown opposition. Although the scores were dead level at 3/4 time, we couldn't push any more and Willi pulled away for a comfortable win in the end which really didn't reflect the closeness of the game all day. It was a real positive to hear from an opposition player how impressed he was with our link and run and also the umpire exclaiming what a quality match it was. Good effort, a win is surely just around the corner

The 35 reserves impressed once again considering our lack of players available to adequately fill a team. In the end it was a case of a handful of players from 1sts and 50s making up the numbers. Just like the 50s the 35s came out of the blocks hard and we experienced a nice handy lead in the first half. After half times as the 50s players arrived to cover those 35s heading off to get ready for their 1sts match, the going progressively got tougher and frustrations started to show. In the end it was a great fight and we're playing well above what we rightfully should be achieving so all players should hold their heads high. We just need to keep positive and refrain from taking our frustrations out on each other. We have another opportunity next game at home to back each other and come home hopefully with a win.

Someone must have spiked the drinks before the game as the 35s came out and played like people possessed. It was brilliant to watch, the ball movement, the pressure and we were rewarded with 4 goals to zip in the first quarter. We knew Western Saints were going to get a grilling and come out hard in the second and that proved to be the case. We couldn't stem the tide and they put on 5 goals to our one to be virtually even at half time. The game was there to be won, but just as the teams in the previous games, we petered out due to tiring legs. It's not easy when you have 7 players playing their 2nd game for the day. But let's not be despondent, some of the play across all three teams have been superb and the rewards will definitely come.

Next games for Round 3 are at home. We are lso doing team and individual photos so it will require that all, whether playing or not, make it to the photo sessions if possible.

Grand Final in 2016 seemed not so long ago but here we were again, the beginning of the first round for 2017. This year we are able to introduce a 2nd 35s team after a strong recruitment drive in the off-season. With new coaches and lots of new players, everyone is still getting to know each other. We expect it to be a challenging year and the weather decided they wouldn't make it any easier for our first Round. After a month of no rain, Melbourne brought out its best and we had ourselves some wet weather football to contend with for our home games at Jordan Reserve *Meade Reserve is still recovering from grass over-sowing).

The 50s started off the day kicking the dew off the ground against Brunswick. With the bare minimum of players to take the field due to some key players missing or injured this match was always going to be a tough ask. And that it proved to be. Whilst we were very competitive, further injuries during the game to Belly, Barnsey and Strangey meant it just wasn't going to be our day. We fought hard all day with our second half proving much better than our first and went down in the end by 33 points.

The 35 reserves led by coach Disco was filled with many new players and a splashing of Over 50s doubling up. This time last year, as a reserves side only, we gave Box Hill North a lesson, however we knew this time circumstances were very different. We very apprehensive as to how we would go. BHN had the jump on us early but we fought back to be only 11 points down at quarter time. The third quarter was probably our best where we outscored them and went into the last quarter 21 points down but in the wet needing a bit of luck to get over th top. Unfortunately we didn't bother the scoreboard in the last as we tired and came out 35 points in arrears. Nevertheless a very good base to build on and we look forward to some comeptitive games ahead.

The 35s came out with a couple of players we recognised also having played in the reserves. Again we had an immense number of new players playing their first games for the Warriors and we were a bit unsure how well we would compete. But what a ripper of the game it was. For the whole game there was barely more than 10 points in it. BHN had the jump on us and went into the first quarter 8 points ahead. But we fought back hard to be only 3 points down at half time. The third was easily our most productive when we piled on 4 goals to take a small buffer of 9 points going into the last on a wet day. Unfortunately we couldn't hold onto our form and BHN sensed the win and peppered the goals in the last to win by the narrowest of margins, 1 point. Our team will only get better as players and coaches get to know each other better and learn their teammates game styles a bit better.

3 losses but all very competitive. Well done. Bring on Round 2

Congratulations to our new announced coaches for season 2017.

Michael 'Frosty' Frost is taking over from last year's coach Lee Mahon. Frosty has played a lot of footy in the past for the Warriors but an injury forced him into premature retirement (at the ripe age of 57).

Everyone knows Craig 'Disco' McKinnon and Disco is coach of the newly formed reserves 35s team for 2017. Disco will also be playing.

After a vey encouraging 2016 for the 50s, Mark 'Marko' Barber will again be padding up to coach. With an influx of additional quality players to the 50s line up for 2017 we're expecting big things. Damo and Shano will be helping on the sidelines.

All these guys have given a lot to the club over the years so please get fully behind them and support their endeavours in the upcoming year. We look forward to a fruitful 2017.

The club has a great culture which promotes a balance of a desire to win with a fair go for all participants. We are seeking a positive energetic coach that enjoys the challenge of bringing out the best in players.

Key Selection Criteria:
Previous experience as a coach will be highly regarded. We are looking for the right 'fit' for our club. Any coach taking on this role needs to be willing to provide fair game time for all players. Our club currently consists of one 35's & one 50's team with the aim of having another 35s team this year. All teams have players of varied ability. The 35s made the grand final reserves last year and the 50s had a very successful year. If we manage numbers for the second over 35's team we would then adopt a more traditional competitive approach to team selection.
